This afternoon I found the following poem in my in-box from Father Leo whose blog I enjoy reading and trying its recipes.
The poem has touched me because I've been thinking lately about how much more meaningful Christmas has become for me lately. When you realize that Christmas is about the birth of God and the beginning of the salvation of the world, it becomes so much more meaningful than the secular message so prominant out there.
Advent Prayer and Christmas Blessing
Written by: Rev. Leo E. Patalinghug 2010
Though there's a chill in the winter air –
A darkening of the night sky.
There's also hope that dares,
To believe there comes an end to our worries and sighs.
From where comes this bravery of heart?
How can people live in the face of fears?
The answer is found when conversion starts,
And our hearts turn to God, and heed what in prayer He hears.
No darkness of night can drown this Bethlehem light,
Though faint at first until one draws ever more near.
With courage His parents sacrificed and now they delight,
And the symphony of angels sing to shepherds, “Be strong for our God is here!”
As Mary's Babe cuddles in her arms
And Joseph looks on with awe and joy,
The Baby who will calm our every storm
Is the guarantor of hope, even though he is only a young boy.
This season, in faith we turn to Him,
Despite our lack of virtue and love.
He causes all to seek His Truth from prayer within,
To assure us that prayers are answered from heaven above.
This silent night, a bit dreary and cold
Is brightened and warmed by God's Child – the Babe.
May our hearts be joyful and our virtue be bold,
As we prepare a place for this Child in our hearts to forever stay.
